Can-Am & Thunder Alley Close out
2005 with Award Banquet Alexandria Bay NY… The top drivers in each respected division were honored at the Can-Am Motorsports Park and Thunder Alley Speed Park hosted at the Bonnie Castle Resort. The event closed out the 2005 racing season, while it set the stage for action at both tracks in 2006. Pat O’Brien claimed Track Championship for Can-Am Motorsports Park. O’Brien had 5 wins in 2005, while having 15 top five finishes and 17 top tens; never finishing out of the top ten in any race he entered in 2005.This was O’Brien’s second championship in the Big Block Modifieds, while making it his tenth at the speedway over the last 17 years. Frankie Caprara, Lee Gill, Danny O’Brien, Bob McCreadie, Billy Dunn, Gus Schmidt, Todd Stewart, Ryan Bartlett and Jason Barney rounded out the top ten for the division. In the 358 Modified division, Willy Decker from Vernon NY took home the top honors, earning his first track championship at the speedway. Decker’s route to the track championship included 9 wins and 17 top five finishes. Mitch Gibbs, Jason Potter, Doug Fuller, Bob Henry, Steve Roberts, Bill Gill, Justin Mason, Rob Galloway and Kyle Dingwall rounded out the top ten of the division. Seventeen year old Kenny Stafford took home the top honors in the Sportsman division, grabbing his first ever track championship. Stafford’s championship included 6 wins, 17 top five finishes, and 19 top ten finishes. Jack Meeks, a recent high school graduate took home the second position, with five wins in 2005. Billy Eisele, Scott Goodrich, Jason Potter, Matt Butler, Scott Webb, Kyle Dingwall, Lance Willix and Scott Parliament rounded out the top 10 for the Sportsman division at Can-Am in 2005. For the first time in track history, the IMCA division track championship was won by two different individuals. Larry Bezner and Paul Calhoun took home the top honors, with this being Calhoun’s fourth consecutive track championship at the speedway and Bezner’s third since the class was instated at the speedway. Bezner’s championship was assisted by his 2 wins, 9 top fives and 14 top tens. Calhoun held 5 wins, 9 top fives and 12 top tens. John Carr, Dale Caswell, Jon Dumas, Chris Taylor, John Mason, Jake Rabetoy, Dan Hilts and Mark Webb rounded out the top ten for the division. Dave Pope took home the Purestock Championship in 2005, breaking Dave Mannise’s streak for a 5th consecutive championship at Can-Am. The championship title came down to the final point’s night in 2005, as Pope won the championship by a mere 10 points. Dave Pope’s championship was upheld with 6 wins, 17 top fives, and 19 top tens. Mannise also held 6 wins, 16 top fives and 19 top tens in 2005. Dana Aikens, Travis Andrews, John Eiss, Mike Cousins, Ed Rogers, Todd Raabe, Brian Holder and Tiger Chapman rounded out the top 10. The Thunder Car divisions were also presented with awards for their mini series that was run in the month of August. In the four cylinder domestic, John Verne took home the championship with Jock Symonds, Bob Teft, Ray Bechler and Chuck Monica rounding out the top five. In the four cylinder foreign division, Robert Martin took home the top honors with Mike Stewart, Tim Verne, Sid Harmer, JR Durham, and OJ White rounding out the top five. Dale Snyder picked up the championship in the 6 cylinder division; while Kevin Smith picked up the 8 cylinder division’s top honors. Finally, in the truck division Kevin Bice took home the championship. The rookie of the year award was given to the driver with the best overall performance at Can-Am in 2005 entering a division for their first complete year. Tim O’Brien picked up the honors in the Modified division. Jason Potter claimed the 358 division, Brad Winters claimed the Sportsman division, and Guy Clark topped the Purestock division. Attention then shifted over to the Thunder Alley Speed Park. The Modifieds, Sportsman, IMCA, Purestock and Thunder Car divisions all received their awards. The first division was the Modified in which Frankie Caprara took home the 2005 Modified Championship over second place John Ramsey. Caprara won the championship in 2005 by a mere 2 points. Caprara held 2 wins in 2005, along with 8 top fives, and 11 top tens. Ramsey picked up 3 wins, with 10 top fives and 11 top tens. Mike Prentice, Ryan Bartlett, Justin Mason, Doug Fuller, Tyler Bartlett, Bob Bennett, Jason Potter, and Billy Dunn completed the top ten for the Modified division in 2005. Jack Meeks took home the top honors in the Sportsman division over Matt Butler. Meeks held three wins and 6 top fives in 2005. Matt Butler, Jason Potter, Jim Kite, Rick McCready, Jordan Bennett, Roy Bresnehan, Lance Willix, Robby Bellinger and Brad Winters completed the top ten. The IMCA division was another close battle, as Rob Keller won the championship by a mere two points over Mark Webb. Tom Conklin, Jon Dumas, John Mason, Chris Taylor, Dan Hilts, Aaron Jacobs, Dean Mitchell, and Jason Dinzler rounded out the top ten. Dave Mannise took the Thunder Alley track championship for the purestock division. Mannise had 3 wins, 12 top fives and 13 top tens to take the championship over Keith Doxtater. Dave Pope, Clint Middlemiss, Dana Aikens, Mike Cousins, Dave Fetterly, John Holder, Ron Hawker, and Zeke McKeown completed the top ten. In the four cylinder Domestic class, Josh Verne picked up the championship over Mike Trapp, Steve Malbouf, Dan Way and BJ Stevens. In the four cylinder foreign class Jack Jones led the class over JR Durham, Jiggs Jones Mike Stewart and Mike Durham. Rush Walts led the way in the 6 cylinder division over James Hall, Johnny LaFaver, Dale Snyder, and Verne Harris. Kevin Smith was the champion in the 8 cylinder division over Brian Palmer, Brian Hardy, John Kenny and Sid Harmer. Finally in the truck division, Mike Durham grabbed the championship over Kris Bice, Kevin Bice, Rush Walts and Nelson Bice II.
