Haers, Dunn, Sweet, Copp, Caswell and Schultz Take Can-Am Wins

On Friday, May 22, 2009 Caprara’s Can-Am Motorsports Park presented the American Traditions Motorsports Memorial Day Weekend Spectacular. In racing action were two DIRTcar Modified/358 Modified Features along with the DIRTcar Sportsman, SUNY Canton Street Stock Series, DIRTcar Crate Late Models and IMCA Modifieds.

The first of two DIRTcar Modified/358 Modified Features kicked off the nights racing action with Adam Roberts and Tim Kerr leading the field to green. Tim Kerr took over the early lead while Adam Roberts and Ryan Bartlett controlled the top three. On lap three, Adam Roberts moved under Tim Kerr to take over the lead on the field while Ryan Bartlett also took advantage and moved up into the second position. Billy Dunn flew to the front of the field by swinging under Tim Kerr and Adam Roberts to jump into the second position while Ryan Bartlett took the lead on the field. Billy Dunn began his track down of Ryan Bartlett, as Dunn had almost a 2 second advantage as the two came across the line. Tim O’Brien and Justin Haers found the bottom lane to their liking as the two moved down under Adam Roberts to enter the top five. On lap number eleven, Billy Dunn moved under Ryan Bartlett coming out of turn three and four took over the lead on the field as Scott Parliament took over second. As the checkered flag dropped, Billy Dunn would collect the win while Justin Haers and Danny O’Brien rounded out the top three.

The IMCA Feature would be next on the docket with Sean Kirby and Chris Thurston on the front row. Chris Thurston would use the outside to his advantage to take over the lead on the field. On lap two, Dale Caswell powered underneath Thurston in turn numbers three and four to take over the lead on the field while Ryan Scott was quietly picking his way through the field. Dale Caswell would extend his advantage on the field while Ryan Scott would use the high side of the speedway to battle with Chris Thurston for the second position as Mike Cousins watched from the fourth spot. As the checkered flag flew, Dale Caswell would take the win while Ryan Scott and Mike Cousins rounded out the top three.

Mike Schultz and Andy Fisk would lead the field to the green in the SUNY Canton Street Stock Series. Mike Schultz would take over the early lead while Ron Wadforth and Andy Fisk would fill out the top three. The top four would run nose to tail while Tiger Chapman in the fifth position would attempt to track down the front of the field. Sid Harmer and Ron Hawker would by Tiger Chapman to take over positions four and five while Ron Wadforth would slide to the inside of Mike Schultz to take over the lead. As the duo came out of turn number three and four, Schultz would keep command of the field while Larry Bezner and Ron Hawker would battle for positions four and five. As the checkered flag would drop, Mike Schultz would pick up the SUNY Canton Street Stock Series win as Ron Wadforth and Sid Harmer Sr. would cross the line for second and third.

Adam Roberts and Tim O’Brien would lead the Modifieds to the green flag with Tim O’Brien taking over the early lead on the field as Adam Roberts and Lance Willix filled out the top three. Justin Haers would move under Adam Roberts to take over the second position while Jason Potter quickly moved into third. On lap five, Justin Haers would move under Tim O’Brien in turns three and four to take over the lead on the field. Bill Gill moved around Tim Kerr to enter the top five as the first five cars began to string themselves out over the field. On a lap ten restart, Jason Potter moved high around Tim O’Brien for the second position while Billy Dunn entered the top five. Dunn quickly moved to the front of the field and by lap 20 was chasing down Justin Haers for the lead. As the checkered flag dropped, Justin Haers would collect the win while Billy Dunn and Jason Potter would round out the top three.

Christine Martin and Dean Patterson would lead the Sportsman to the green flag. Christine Martin took over the early control with Dean Patterson and Alan Fink controlling positions two and three. Alan Fink moved under Dean Patterson in turn number two to take over the second position while Fink then moved under Christine Martin the following lap to take over the lead. Brandon Sweet and Tom Juhl moved under Tom Conklin to enter the top five while Fink extended his lead on the field. On a lap nine restart, Brandon Sweet and Josh Van Brocklin moved by Christine Martin to take over the second and third positions. Brandon Sweet and Alan Fink checked out on the field as the two battled nose to tail for the lead as there were 10 laps left in the race. On lap 17, Brandon Sweet successfully moved by Alan Fink to take over the lead on the field. As the checkered flag dropped, Brandon Sweet would collect the win while Alan Fink and Sammy Reakes would round out the top three.

Racing will continue tomorrow evening, Saturday May 23rd as part of American Traditions Motorsports Weekend. The DIRTcar Big Block and Small Block Modifieds will be in action. Joining them will be the SUNY Canton Sportsman Series, SUNY Canton Street Stock Series, Thunder Cars and Pure Stocks.
